It’s spring cleaning time. My Mum used to drag EVERYTHING out of its place, disinfect the entire area and then put it all back to rights. Even she would giggle at the thought of me doing ACTUAL spring cleaning as a dining room table of laundry is begging to be folded. But what I am thinking about is Editing your LIFE. Spring clean the corners and not necessarily put things back.
In the last few years a book by Marie Kondo, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing has been a big part of the Minimalist movement. It’s about getting rid of things that don’t bring you joy. I read the book and it really is phenomenal. It’s a little on the OCD side, but I love the message – clear your space and your head. Cleaning your closet is a great idea and going through the house too. But all day long I hear people say about how busy they are and that they are too busy to do the things they really long for in their hearts. Sometimes a good book and a cup of coffee would better serve you than looking over emails, going to a party for an acquaintance or getting sucked into yet another multi-level marketing party.
Editing Ruthlessly means you’ll have to understand that the word “no” is an answer. It doesn’t need a follow up. That’s hard to do. But I have a feeling if more people said no and were authentic in their reactions, we’d be a much happier society.
Social Media – We spend a lot of time on it. It’s not lost on me that you are probably reading this because of social media. Turn off all the notifications. Set a time to look at it. It’s just distracting to get a ding every 4 seconds because someone liked your post of your coffee with a heart in it. A great program is called More Social, Less Media by Dallas Hartwig. It’s free and full of good ideas for bring the pendulum swinging back to the middle.
Your Email– One of the smartest time management things I ever read was to let people know you check your email at set times, say 11am, 2pm and 5pm. That way you are not reacting to everything that hits your inbox. You are getting your work done then checking all your emails at once. An even more radical idea is to declare Email Bankruptcy. Sometimes knowing that there are 999 unread emails in your email box causes stress. Get rid of them.
Those Friends – Start tightening up the circle. There are some friends that can be managed through Facebook. I started a little experiment a few years ago. I quit being the “dinner date maker”. I was the one that if someone said, “we should go to dinner”, I would pull out the calendar and make the date. Mostly, because I had a very busy period of my life, I decided I would let them call me and make the arrangements. Some did, some didn’t. It doesn’t mean we love each other any less, it’s just priorities.
Your Calendar – Does your kid REALLY need to go to every sport known to man? Are you involved in some groups that you used to love, but now you dread going to? Are there things you can delegate or just get rid of all together? You know what they are. Pull the plug.
These are just a few ideas, but make your life count. Do the things you WANT to be doing. Take control, edit ruthlessly. It’s your masterpiece after all.
